Conciliation talks with Loblaw Companies break off
June 18, 2010
Ontario Ministry of Labour-convened conciliation talks aimed at reaching a new labour agreement covering nearly 30,000 members of UFCW Canada who work at over 100 Loblaw-owned stores throughout Ontario broke off today with no progress towards a settlement. Further conciliation talks scheduled for the week of July 5 have been cancelled. The union is requesting a "no-board" report from the Minister and will be conducting strike votes around the province beginning the week of July 5.
The talks broke down over the company's refusal to back off the position that it have the right to convert all conventional stores to the RCSS/Great Food conditions with no buyout or buydowns. Moreover, the company is asking for concessions in the RCSS and Great Food stores. The bargaining committees of all three locals were unanimous in rejecting this position as unacceptable.
Talks are expected to resume the week of July 19, this time with a Mediator from the Ministry of Labour.
"We need to go into those mediation talks with a strong strike mandate," said UFCW Local 1000A President Kevin Corporon in a phone message to the Master Bargaining Committee and Executive Board.
"It is important that we have a very large turnout for these votes to show the company that the members fully support their union and their bargaining committee."

"Round the clock negotiations continue. We expect to come out with a

"If there is a memorandum, or final offer, it will be presented to our
members before the commencement of a strike.

negotiating parties should walk away from the table."
