Stewards are the Union’s Front Line Activists

Local 1000A stewards are worker representatives who volunteer their time to answer questions, correct problems and give information to their co-workers. Theirs is a very important role. Without stewards, the union would not be nearly as effective.

Members in each workplace or bargaining unit elect co-workers to the position of steward when there are more members wanting to be stewards than there are steward positions available. In workplaces where an election is not needed, the full time staff representative will act on behalf of the local union president and appoint a member as a steward.

Stewards are employees in the workplace, but have decided to take on the added responsibility of representing worker interests, and helping to keep communication lines open between the workplace and the union office. Stewards maintain a front line presence to keep a watchful eye so as the employer does not violate the collective agreement.

If a member has a problem, their steward is the first person they should contact. The steward will than assist the worker or contact the full time staff representative if necessary.

Local 1000A regularly schedules Spring and Fall training sessions for the stewards to assist them with the tools necessary to fulfill their duties.
