To the Members of UFCW Local 1000A

We can’t reap the reward if we don’t take up the challenge. Each of us has a part to play.

A dynamic union keeps ideas flowing and action levels high. And Local 1000A is a dynamic union.

We’re nearly twice the size we were only seven years ago. And it’s not only numbers that measure our growth. We’ve expanded staff, training, and initiatives to make sure Local 1000A members get the best service possible and that our union is a constructive part of the overall efforts of the labour movement.

The greatest challenge right now for retail unions is to organize retail chains such as Sobeys and Wal-Mart. New locations are sprouting up as these chains try to nudge unionized grocers and retailers out of their position in the market.

When unionized employers lose market share, unionized workers stand to lose jobs or wages and benefits. When non-unionized competitors are nipping at the heels of our union employers, our employers use that competition to try to justify concession demands, whether or not they are justifiable.

Unions never have the luxury of paying exclusive attention to the most pressing problem of the day. We are always working to hold on to the gains we’ve made for our members. We’re always trying to make new gains. This is true whether we’re talking about bargaining a good contract, making the workplace healthy and safe, representing injured workers, or pushing for the things beyond the workplace that matter most to working families – like health care and education.

To pull all of this off, we need the ideas and commitment of every member of this union. We have a dynamic team of members, leaders, and staff. That’s our union’s key to maintaining our strong standing at the same time as we meet the new challenges. Get involved in the issue that matters most to you.

Every contribution makes us stronger. Be part of the action!

In Solidarity
