Loblaw contract talks nearing critical phase

August 28, 2010

Contract talks were held from Tuesday to Friday this past week in Niagara Falls. While there have been no breakthroughs, there has been enough movement by the company on the union's key issues to warrant additional talks.

Further talks are scheduled from September 8-11, with the goal of reaching a settlement that the union's negotiating committee can recommend to the members. If no settlement is reached at that time, a strike deadline will be finalized.

A media statement to this effect has been jointly released by the presidents of all locals that signed the 2005 Solidarity Pact: Scott Penner (1977), Kevin Corporon (1000A) and Shawn Haggerty (175 & 633). Read more...

Contract Talks Continue Between UFCW Canada and Loblaw

July 23, 2010

Negotiations aimed at reaching a new collective agreement for 30,000 unionized Ontario workers at stores owned by Loblaw Companies Ltd. adjourned after a four-day bargaining session in Niagara Falls. The workers are represented by UFCW Canada local unions 1977, 1000A and 175 & 633.

Talks involving the full bargaining committees of both parties are scheduled to resume on August 9, 2010.

Earlier this month, the workers voted by more than 97 per cent to give their union a strike mandate. The union has said, however, that it will stay at the bargaining table as long as progress is being made towards a settlement.

UFCW-Loblaw store contract talks resume under Ontario provincial mediation following massive strike vote

July 19, 2010

Negotiations between three UFCW Canada local unions and Loblaw Companies Ltd. resumed today in Niagara Falls with the assistance of an Ontario Ministry of Labour Mediation Officer.

The negotiations are for renewal collective agreements covering about 30,000 front line workers at Loblaws, Zehrs, Real Canadian Superstores, Great Food and Fortinos stores throughout Ontario who are members of UFCW Canada Locals 1000A, 1977, and 175 & 633.

Talks are scheduled to continue until this Friday, July 23.

After a rocky start to negotiations that led to a 97 per cent-plus strike vote by union members earlier this month, both parties have now agreed that all issues are on the table for discussion.

The union has declared that it will remain at the bargaining table as long as talks are progressing.

Conciliation talks with Loblaw Companies break off

June 18, 2010

Ontario Ministry of Labour-convened conciliation talks aimed at reaching a new labour agreement covering nearly 30,000 members of UFCW Canada who work at over 100 Loblaw-owned stores throughout Ontario broke off today with no progress towards a settlement. Further conciliation talks scheduled for the week of July 5 have been cancelled. The union is requesting a "no-board" report from the Minister and will be conducting strike votes around the province beginning the week of July 5.

The talks broke down over the company's refusal to back off the position that it have the right to convert all conventional stores to the RCSS/Great Food conditions with no buyout or buydowns. Moreover, the company is asking for concessions in the RCSS and Great Food stores. The bargaining committees of all three locals were unanimous in rejecting this position as unacceptable.

Talks are expected to resume the week of July 19, this time with a Mediator from the Ministry of Labour.

"We need to go into those mediation talks with a strong strike mandate," said UFCW Local 1000A President Kevin Corporon in a phone message to the Master Bargaining Committee and Executive Board.

"It is important that we have a very large turnout for these votes to show the company that the members fully support their union and their bargaining committee."
