Local 1000A is proud to congratulate Mary-Joe Eaton on her election to the Executive Board of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council.
“I am very excited and am looking forward to working with our brothers and sisters from all the different unions,” said Mary-Joe, a Local 1000A steward at Kretschmar. “We have all been given the power to stand united and strong and we need to get that feeling back into all of our members within all our unions. For me this is a great opportunity for us to all work together to protect and improve our rights for this generation as well as for future generations.”
Thanks to the efforts of Local 1000A, injured worker Ruby Burtch will receive a substantial settlement from WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) in compensation payments.
Ruby was permanently injured after following the instructions of her supervisor, who asked her to lift large boxes of dishes by herself from the skid to the top rung of the display case at a Toronto Loblaws. The boxes were too heavy to be lifted by one person.
Local 1000A is pleased to announce the union has won an arbitration permitting the use of anti-fatigue mats at u-scan podiums. The arbitrator found that the company’s removal of the anti-fatigue mat at the Great Food store in Vanier breached the Occupational Health and Safety Act and therefore, upheld the union’s policy grievance.
Since adopting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada as its charity of choice in 1985, UFCW Canada raised more than $21 million for leukemia research. One of the ways Local 1000A helps contribute to this impressive tally is with our annual Cash Calendar fundraiser. Everyday in 2012, those who purchased a 2012 Cash Calendar will have the chance to win.
